Mrs. Alice S. Onque, 59, former executive director of the Hallie Q. Brown house, died Tuesday in Washington, D.C., after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Onque died in D.C. Village. Friends here said she had been bedridden since undergoing brain surgery last December.

Mrs. Onque served as executive director of Hallie Q. Brown from 1950 to May of 1965, when she resigned to join the staff of Women in Community Service, Inc., Washington. Mrs. Onque was born in Muskogee, Okla., the daughter of the first Negro physician licensed to practice in Oklahoma. She went to high school in Muskogee and then went to the University of Kansas at Lawrence. She taught for two years after she was graduated.

Mrs. Onque began her social work career in Minneapolis at the Phyllis Wheatley House in 1929. She later worked in Philadelphia, Brooklyn and New York City. She held a bachelor of science degree from the University of Kansas and a master of arts degree in social work from the University of Minnesota. Hallie Q. Brown grew considerably and expanded its services while Mrs. Onque was its executive director. When she resigned, its membership totaled nearly 700 and a weekend program of cultural arts had been added along with a day-long nursery school.

Mrs. Onque's survivors include her husband, Earle T., a son, Earle T. Jr., Pittsburgh, and three grandchildren.

From the Collection: 1.58 Linear Feet (1 container) : This scrapbook, composed of 37 pages, front and back, with a front cover and a back cover. Each page also features two punch holes along one, short edge. This scrapbook has been unbound, with each page placed in a protective sleeve. An acid-free, archival folder containing photocopies of the newspaper and article clippings is also contained within the box. The front and back covers of the scrapbook are forest green in hue, with gold detailing. The center of the front cover features a sigil of a green lion in a gold shield, standing on his hind legs. The condition of individual materials pasted, clipped, or stapled to each page is generally good, but does feature adhesives such as tape, glue, staples and clips. Photographs have some fading and discoloration, otherwise the condition is good. General condition of the scrapbook is good. ; Each contruction paper-like page is a deep violet, almost burgundy color, with the following dimensions: 40 cm by 26 cm.
