General

The Winter Carnival was founded in 1886 to contest a claim that Saint Paul was uninhabitable during the winter. The carnival is a celebration of Minnesota winters over a ten-day period that includes the crowning of King Boreas and Queen of the Snows, day and evening parades, a medallion hunt, and other activities. Occasionally, elaborate ice castles are built.
