Scope and Contents

Eleven, typed pages, written and prepared by Henry R. Thomas, former Executive Director of Hallie Q. Brown Community Center. This document lists the major events which led to Hallie Q. Brown Community House moving from its' first location to its' current one. The introduction to the document reads as follows:

The early black migrants to St. Paul had primarily the black churches and its leaders to help them with their social economic health and housing problems. The black churches were joined in their concern for black people by the black fraternal organizations. On August 24, 1908, the Mars Lodge of Odd Fellows purchased six lots on Aurora Ave, between Kent and Mackubin and constructed the present buliding presently occupied by Hallie Q. Brown. The building was called the Union Hall Association and was completed in 1914. The formal opening of the hall was held on November 8, 1915.
