The International Institute, Inc., established in St. Paul, December 12, 1919, is a service bureau and recreation center for people of foreign background designed to help them in their adjustment to American life. Similar agencies under various names are organized in about forty cities having large immigrant populations. After functioning for many years as a branch of the Young Women's Christian Association, the International Institute, Inc. was recognized as a separate corporation of men and woman on November 1, 1938. It is a member agency of the St. Paul Council of Social Agencies and of the Community Chest and is associated with other independent International Institutes and agencies of similar purpose in a national federation, the National Institute of Immigrant Walfare.
